Dropouts

Selecting a Dropout

General Information

  • We manufacture a wide variety of rear dropouts in titanium, steel, and stainless steel.

  • When choosing your dropout, consider the type of hub, derailleur, and brake mount that will be used to ensure that compatibility and clearances are met.

Important!

  • Compatibility between components is only guaranteed when using parts made by Paragon Machine Works.

  • We cannot advise or make recommendations for parts made by other manufacturers.

Bending Dropout Tabs

Important!

Please do not bend the tabs on our dropouts to align them with the stays!  Instead:

  • Slot the stays at an angle or use a transition piece like our seatstay/chainstay plugs.

Bent Dropout Tabs

  • Can weaken the dropout
  • Introduce stresses that make further alignment difficult
  • May interfere with how the dropout functions. This is particularly applicable to all our adjustable dropouts
  • ARE NOT WARRANTEED

Round, Rear Dropouts

Simple, clean, elegant. This style of dropout allows the chainstay and seatstay to be oriented at a wide range of angles.

Snap Ring Dropouts

This small, light dropout utilizes a snap ring instead of bolts to secure the hanger for a smaller/lighter profile.

Syntace Dropouts

These dropouts are compatible with Syntace X-12 system. They accommodate a concentric or eccentric threaded insert in the right frame component to center the wheel in the frame and correct inconsistencies.

The bolt-on brake insert (BoBI) allows for different brake configurations with built-in alignment.

Information

  • The seat stay tabs are swept back, allowing stay and caliper clearance for all frame sizes.

  • Perform a mock-up with the caliper you intend to use before building.

Alignment

  • Eccentric styles require a bushing:

    • Titanium must be welded in

    • Stainless steel and steel must be silver soldered/brazed in

    • Bushing is a structural part of the assembly

Flat Mount Disc Brake Dropouts

This dropout allows for flat mount disc brake applications; the locating features on the caliper mounts are integral so no fixture is needed.

This style of dropout is good for most modern, small, low-profile calipers.

Information

  • Not all calipers will be able to fit properly in this confined space

  • We highly recommend doing a mock-up with the caliper you intend to use before you start building the frame

  • Because of the long length of the chainstay tab, heel clearance may be compromised

  • For maximum clearance put the chainstays on the inside face of the chainstay tab or use plugs
