Adjustable Dropouts
Overview
General Information
Our adjustable dropouts allow for different brake and derailleur configurations through the use of right and left-replaceable inserts. Consider the following when you select your frame component:
1) Aesthetics
2) Frame application
3) Weight of rider
4) Any other features that are important to you or your frame builder, i.e., the option to mount racks, use a belt drive system, etc.
Features
- Function as a modular dropout and allow for changes or updates to an existing frame
- Allow for simultaneous chain tensioning and proper positioning of the brake caliper
- Have enough range for all common applications
- Will work with a chain or belt drive
- Offered in stainless steel and titanium; we do not make them out of steel due to rust/paint issues

- Compatibility between components is only guaranteed when using parts made by Paragon Machine Works
- We cannot advise or make recommendations for parts made by other manufacturers

Insert Information
General Information
- Available in bare polished or black anodized 6061 aluminum
- Available for 10 or 12 mm hubs
- 12 mm inserts have a M12 x 1.5 thread
- Sliding dropout inserts move in a line
- Rocker dropout inserts move in an arc
- Fixed in position by clamping cap screws
- Will wear out over time; inspect them regularly and replace as needed
- Skewers are available at a 23% discount when purchased with a compatible right side insert; one skewer discount/insert
Preventing Slippage
- Verify that your frame components and inserts are made by Paragon Machine Works; we cannot guarantee compatibility with products that are not made by us. Note: this is the number one reason why inserts slip!
- Verify that the contact surfaces between the frame components and inserts are free of contaminants such as paint, dirt, grease, etc.; there must be metal to metal contact ONLY.
If you have verified the above and your inserts are still slipping, then we recommend:
- Upgrading to titanium screws
- Applying medium strength Loctite® Threadlocker Blue 242 to the screw threads:
- Cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces

Torque Values
General Information
1) Always use our 304 stainless steel washers with the screw
- Helps to spread the load over a larger area
- Hold the parts together better
- Keeps your frame from getting damaged from repeated tightening/loosening of the screws
2) Titanium screws offer the following advantages over our stock steel button head cap screw:
- The hexagon is deeper and manufactured to a closer tolerance
- Lighter
- Aesthetically pleasing
- Can be torqued 10% more than our steel bolt (see below)
Torque Specs
- 24 to 26 N-m
- 2.4 to 2.6 Kg-m
- 17 - 19 foot/pounds
Important!
- Unless you have a brand new 5 mm wrench, at the upper range of these values there is a possibility of rounding out the socket head on a steel
